This week in Forest School, R2 went on a hunt in search of lots of crispy, brown leaves. Armed with a bucket, they collected enough to create some leafy hedgehog pictures.
The children learnt that hedgehogs love to hibernate amongst leaves. We didn’t come across any hedgehogs in the school grounds, but once in class one of the children noticed a hitchhiker in the bucket of leaves; a shield bug. The children were fascinated with this tiny, harmless creature (which is appropriately named due to the shape of its back which looks like a shield) and learnt that in Autumn they are brown in colour and in Spring and Summer they are green to help with camouflage amongst the leaves. The children were keen to hold their discovery before safely releasing him back outside.
