This week in Forest School, Year 5H learnt how to use a fire steel confidently. Year 5 have used fire steels previously as part of their Vikings topic, but the aim of today’s session was to build their confidence.
Working in teams they practiced this skill over and over. There was no real time limit, the aim was to be competent and to encourage and advise each other. I was extremely impressed with how well they did this.
Afterwards the children took part in a relay race. After the whistle was blown, each team member ran to their fire steel and had to create a spark before running back to tag their next team member.
By the end of the session every pupil gave a ‘thumbs up’ in terms of how confident they felt about using a fire steel. Success all round!
