We started our activity on a very rainy Monday afternoon focussing on snail hunting. The rain brings out a lot of snails and slugs and I thought this would be the perfect activity for our very first Forest School session in Year 1.
However, Forest School is very child led and as the activity progressed the pupils discovered a whole hoard of conkers that had fallen from the Horse Chestnut trees on the school field. Our activity quickly changed from snail hunting to conker collecting. The challenge: to see who could collect the most conkers. Today, 18 was the number to beat! The children connected with nature and learnt that conkers can be found in the Autumn months, come in very spiky, green cases and grow on horse chestnut trees.
